The Key to Keywords

by Jeev Trika, 8/13/2007

Sometimes we take the Internet so for granted. Browsing on the Internet has become almost second nature to us. The minute we come across something that we want to find out about, we connect to the Internet, go to our favorite search engine and type our query into the search bar. As soon as we hit the search button, we are given pages and pages of results, some we can use and others that are not so relevant.

All this sounds so simple but before these websites and search engines are put together, the processes behind them are not so simple. If you think about it, the one thing that binds the user, the search engine and the websites together are the keywords that you type into the search bar. It is via these keywords that a user can communicate to a search engine and the search engine can, in turn, find relevant websites for the user. Without these keywords, these search engines are rendered useless. Think of it like a car without petrol; the mass of technology and engineering would sit there, powerlessly, if there were no petrol to run the machine.

So to say that keywords are important is an understatement. But realizing their importance is not enough for online marketers. Understanding how keywords can be used to make their sites more visible on the Internet is just as important. For starters, your keywords can really determine if your online marketing efforts are going to be a success or not. Look at it this way; by choosing the right keywords for your site, you will make it easier for visitors to find you. And increased traffic gives you more opportunities to convince your visitors to take the actions you want them to take. Once they get to your site, it is all about converting visitors into buyers. But getting them to your site in itself is a huge challenge and keywords are what will help you there.

Choosing the right keywords is an elaborate process. It is important that you research keywords so that you know which ones are apt for you. There are a number of keyword research tools that you can get online, which will help you figure out which keywords you should be using. Basically, these keyword research tools will give you an idea about how popular a keyword is. You will also be able to find alternatives to that word. Knowing the popularity of a word and the alternatives to the word can use really take you closer to finding appropriate keywords for your site.
